FENAY MACHINE SAFETY BRINGS CONWY JOINERS AND MACHINES INTO COMPLIANCE WITH PUWER 98

When the Building Maintenance Section of Conwy County Borough Council’s Directorate of Social Care and Housing needed to up-grade existing machinery in its joiners’ workshop at Mochdre, Colwyn Bay, to bring it into compliance with PUWER 98 regulations, and to provide user training, Huddersfield based Fenay Machine Safety Ltd. was chosen to carry out this work.

“We chose Fenay Machine Safety as they have always provided satisfactory service in the past,” says Conwy Council’s Health & Safety Co-ordinator, Graham John.

Following an in-depth report detailing the work required to bring each individual machine into compliance with PUWER 98 requirements, Fenay Machine Safety undertook the up-grading of five machines – a cross cut saw, table saw, planer and thicknesser, morticer and a band saw. Machine specific refresher training in Safety Awareness and the correct use of this equipment was then delivered for 18 joiners. Certification of compliance was also provided for both machines and operatives.

“Fenay offers a professional service, is flexible in arranging work to be carried out and has delivered all our needs on time,” adds Graham John.

Fenay Machine Safety Ltd. is widely recognised as the leading expert in PUWER 98 compliance and is a ‘one-stop-shop’ for all aspects of machinery safety and employee training issues, with consultants and engineers qualified and experienced in a wide range of industries.

MACHINE COMPLIANCE KEEPS ROUND POLES IN LINE FOR M & M TIMBER

An ongoing programme of machine compliance in line with PUWER 98 is being undertaken by Fenay Machine Safety Ltd. for M & M Timber near Kidderminster, the largest specialist pole-rounding mill in Europe.

M & M Timber operates a large semi-automated pole-rounding production line that incorporates pole-rounders, cross-cuts, de-barkers and pointers, as well as several auxiliary machines, including profilers, specialised scalloping machines, Cundey peeling machines and fast pointers.

“The business was started around 30 years ago and with the introduction of PUWER 98 we recognised that around 90% of our machinery would need to be brought into line with the regulations,” explains M & M Timber’s Steve Farmer. “It is a massive job and so we decided to use experts as it is far too large for us to handle in-house. Fenay Machine Safety are the experts in PUWER 98 regulations and we felt that this was the best route to compliance.”

Following an initial in-depth survey of each machine, a detailed report and quotation was provided. The work being carried out by Fenay Machine Safety is predominantly the fitting of power brakes, correct stop buttons, isolators, brake systems and up-dating of machine guarding. This will be completed in two stages to accommodate M & M Timber’s production requirements.

“We were given advice regarding Health & Safety on every piece of machinery and a certificate of compliance is supplied for each machine on completion,” continues Steve Farmer. “Certification is very important in providing evidence for Health & Safety.

“Fenay are very experienced in their field and willing to wok within our production schedules. They are extremely helpful and have given us a great deal of advice, which has been taken on board. Being truly independent advice we feel confident that our machines will meet the requirements of the regulations.”

CERTIFICATED MACHINE SAFETY FOR STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY OF WALES COLLEGE, NEWPORT

In depth knowledge and professionalism won the day for Fenay Machine Safety Ltd. when University of Wales College, Newport wanted to bring woodworking and metalworking machinery into compliance with current regulations.

UCWN has two main workshops with an extensive range of machinery. At the internationally renowned School of Art, Media and Design both woodworking and metalworking machines are used in creating sculptures and other design structures and elements; the School of Education uses woodworking machinery as part of its technology and design training programmes.

Following the introduction of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98), UCWN needed to ensure compliance of all its equipment – totalling around 80 machines – and took the decision to use the services of an independent consultancy.

“We were introduced to Fenay Machine Safety via recommendation from other universities,” explains UCWN’s Wayne Jones. “We were particularly impressed with the fact that they provide a written certificate of compliance for each machine on completion of work. No other company we approached offered this service.”

Following an in-depth report detailing the work required to bring each individual machine into compliance with PUWER 98 requirements, Fenay Machine Safety has already completed the first phase of work in adjusting run-down times, retrofitting, renewing and up-dating guarding on both woodworking and metalworking machines, and a second phase will commence during UCWN’s Summer break.

“The professionalism and in-depth knowledge of their field demonstrated by Fenay Machine Safety is excellent,” concludes Wayne Jones.

Fenay Machine Safety offers a range of risk management consultancy, compliance, engineering and specialist services to a wide range of industry sectors from woodworking, metalworking and construction to education, health service and event management.
